A major producer of movie film needed to automate the inspection of the film for defects and dirt. Inspection was done manually, so even experienced operators missed things.
Voler designed and built a vision system to detect defects. The system uses a line-scan camera and infrared illumination to detect dirt and defects without interference from the image on the film. Defects 25 microns and larger are detected at a film speed of 200 feet per minute.
We worked with the company to specify the system, then we selected the components, designed and built some of the electronics, and designed and built the enclosure so that it fit into their existing equipment. We configured the machine vision software to automatically capture images and analyze them for defects. The size and shape of the defect is reported by custom software.
