A Vision, A Challenge, and a Hard Truth 

In September 2023, we connected with the CEO of a health-monitoring medical device company. He had already endured a grueling five-year journey to bring his wellness medical device to market. He had designed the product himself, working with a team overseas, facing countless challenges along the way. Now, he wanted to take the next step to transform his tablet-sized health monitoring system into a sleek, wearable device for seniors.

His vision was ambitious. But as we listened carefully, the challenges became clear, and we identified a critical roadblock. His vision required a wearable device capable of accurately measuring blood pressure on the wrist. But here was the truth—no existing technology in 2024 could do that with the accuracy required for FDA approval.

The conversation was not about whether to proceed or not—it was more nuanced. Multiple paths to measuring blood pressure on the wrist were explored, outlining the risks and likely costs involved. It was not impossible, but success would require significant time and investment, making it a high-risk endeavor. By presenting the trade-offs clearly, an informed business decision could be made, and ultimately, the risk and cost were deemed too great.

Ongoing discussions helped refine the vision, aligning ambition with practical feasibility. By November 2024, a pivotal conversation highlighted wrist-based blood pressure measurement's technical and regulatory challenges. His response was clear: he had no device without blood pressure on the wrist. Understanding the complexity, the focus shifted to exploring alternative solutions and evaluating trade-offs rather than pursuing an impractical approach.

It was a moment of reckoning. He had to decide whether to pursue uncertain promises or pivot. We offered alternatives—he could license technology from others claiming to solve the issue—but we were not confident in the available sensor technology at that time. 

When Technology Catches Up, Trust Prevails 

Fast-forward to CES 2025. There, we discovered emerging sensor technologies that might overcome the roadblock we faced just months earlier. Excited by the possibilities, we contacted the CEO. But by then, he had already taken his project to another team overseas that promised the solution at a low price—despite not sharing our same concerns about accuracy.

Yet, because we had been transparent from the start, we had built something even more valuable than a contract. We built trust.

If they falter, we'll be the ones he turns to for help. And if their approach doesn't work, we'll be the ones he calls to lead the system integration engineering for the entire device.
